Biography Wendy Lawrence
A beginning in South India
Wendy was born and brought up on tea and coffee estates in the Western Ghats of South India. These estates were surrounded by dense jungle – a wildlife paradise.
There were many incredible wild animals such as elephants, tigers, leopards, bears, bison, pangolins, porcupines as well as birds and reptiles, including the magnificent king cobra.
A lasting impact…
The jungles had a lasting impact on her – a passion for wildlife and its habitats.
After being educated in India and England, Wendy worked in London for a number of years before returning to her beloved India.
National Parks and Wildlife
On her return, she worked for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) at the Guindy Snake Park in Chennai and was there for the launch of Project Tiger.
After coming to Australia she was a volunteer rehabilitator for NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
And for the past 20 years she has been rehabilitating raptors and owls for the Northern Rivers Wildlife Carers Inc. (NRWC) in northern New South Wales.
Care for wildlife
She lives on a two hectare property where she has a few aviaries of varying sizes and a large flight aviary measuring 24m x 12m x 5m. Here raptors that have been in care for over three weeks can regain their fitness, strength and agility prior to release.
This aviary was built with enormous help from NPWS, NRWC, Australian Geographic and many other organisations after falconry based free-flight rehabilitation was no longer permitted.
Sick and orphaned very young birds
Wendy has rehabilitated hundreds of injured and sick raptors and owls. She has also raised and released orphaned and very young birds that have come into care.
She has had 18 out of the 24 species of Australian raptors and two of the nine owl species – the Boobooks and Barn owls.
